They Take The Real Shots!

Written by A.J. on . Posted in WLS Blog

This is cool.  I’m excited.  You should dig it.

What do we all love to look at?  Yes, pictures, photos, images! If you said other things… I don’t know what your looking for, but it’s probably not here.

For those of us who do dig the photographic arts, we thought we would try to introduce you to some of the incredibly talented image makers that are documenting the beautiful game.

Soccer photography. Who takes those awesome shots of your favourite team?  It ain’t me… probably isn’t you either.  If it is, you have a cool job, and I’m jealous. We’ll bring you the first “Soccer Shots” on Wednesday. Hope you check it out!

I’m An American & Dammit… I Love Soccer.

Written by Kent on . Posted in Off The Field, WLS Blog

Being a sports fan in the United States is easy. On every corner, at every bar, and in every conference room you’ll find conversations about the upcoming Super Bowl. You might hear dialogue about the latest NBA marriage fallout. There is always someone near who is spouting off about their fantasy team. Or, depending on where you are at, you might overhear discussion about Tim Thomas the hockey player versus Tim Thomas the activist. However, being a soccer fan in the United States is still not that easy. If I walk in to my local bar or restaurant and start talking El Clasico I can guarantee one of two outcomes:

Outcome one: background music screeches to a halt, children scream out quickly and then are suddenly silenced, and every set of eyes in the place glares at me in rage until I spontaneously burst into flames.

Outcome two: background music screeches to a halt, a bouncer comes out of nowhere (even at this nice, family-owned bar and grill), and fires me through the plate-glass window at the front of the establishment while everyone in the restaurant cheers.

Alright, those might be slight embellishments. (And I do mean slight. I damn near got beaten to a pulp and left for dead at a Dairy Queen for arguing about how soccer was better than basketball. I’ll share that story with you when I feel that you are old enough.)

In all honesty, being a soccer fan in the States has gotten better – but not due to public perception. It has gotten better because of the Internet and cable/satellite television. Growing up as a child in the 80’s, my access to soccer information was limited to outdated encyclopedias in the local library, outdated articles in random outdated publications, and in Subbuteo ads in the back of said random, outdated publications. (Damn, I wanted a Subbuteo table in the worst way.)

Soccer on TV? That was unheard of, with the exception of “Soccer Made in Germany.” If I could haul may happy behind out of bed on Saturday mornings I could watch this nugget of pure gold. It was an hour long weekly that was played on PBS in the late 70’s and early 80’s. This program focused on the old West German football teams and it might of well have been sent directly from the heavens. It didn’t matter that I couldn’t pronounce Kaiserslautern or Koln. It didn’t matter that the video was grainy and that the players’ shorts were so tight and tiny that they looked like briefs. All that mattered was the fact that soccer was being shown on American television. I was hooked.

As the years went by, soccer news and soccer games started making inroads towards the American psyche. We saw Paul launch us to Italy. We were able to see the World Cup come to our shores. We saw Brandi rip off her shirt. We saw Landon personally keep our country’s hopes alive. In spite of that the collective consciousness of soccer is somewhere behind hockey and tennis in America.

Today, access to soccer is available 24/7. FSC and the Internet have been priceless gifts to me and other struggling Yankee soccer fans. We can now catch up on highlights in the middle of the night or take off work early to catch an FA Cup match. We have the power! Well, the power to consume soccer at least. The power to have intelligent discussions with strangers in public is still a ways away. But that’s fine for now. I can’t ask my neighbor if she thinks Messi should play more of a holding role without having her look at me as if a chupacabra is on my head. But I have people like you guys for that, and I’m grateful. I’ll just have to stick with asking her if she thinks Tom Brady will have a good game or if LeBron will ever come back to those of us in Ohio. She’ll answer that crap and think I’m normal. I feel bad for her…

Do You Know Edu?

Written by A.J. on . Posted in The Game, WLS Blog

Hey it’s a bit of a busy time for the national teams.  Both the U.S. & Canadian women are looking to get through the semi-finals tonight to qualify for London 2012.  Let’s hope they both do as they should and make into the final.  And the men just got into some friendly action against Venezuela and Panama.

So we thought we’d give you a little Maurice and unless you are some kind of know it all here the man himself will tell you one thing you don’t know about the Edu.

Walk Off The Earth Loves TFC

Written by A.J. on . Posted in Off The Field, WLS Blog

Walk Off The Earth, yes… that band, they play that song, all 5 of them on 1 guitar.

Disgustingly talented. Ridiculously creative.  Beard guy at the end.  Yeah that band.  Well, since they’re just down the road from us here at WLS we are taking an undeserved claim to them.

We’ll also make the unsubstantiated claim that they are big MLS supporters.  Primarily Toronto FC.

Our sole piece of evidence and entire basis of fact… Marshall rockin’ the TFC jersey in this island groovin’ cover of Sarah McLachlan’s Ice Cream.

If you haven’t already checked out their other videos, both covers and originals, you should continue to slack from what you are supposed to be doing and head on over to the YouTube and tube the hell out of WOTE!

Then go buy some of their music.

Also, check out friend to WLS, Karen Bliss’ interview with the band last week on MSN.

Fine… here’s that other video too.

Project X

Written by A.J. on . Posted in Off The Field

Project X is a far cry from the “chimp test pilots that Matthew Broderick helps escape from the evil US Air Force’s nuclear radiation side effect on pilots program” Project X that made me believe I could get a pet monkey and teach it to talk… and possible fly me to safety in the event of all out nuclear war.

This Project X is director Todd Phillips latest. You know the guy who made The Hangover. Well this movie looks like it will scare me… I couldn’t handle myself at a party like this.  I would be much less cool than the least cool kid there and would probably end up just staring at a lot of things with my mouth wide open.  I can’t wait to see it.

Written by A.J. on . Posted in The Game, WLS Blog

So with the 2012 CONCACAF Women’s Tournament metaphorically right around the corner (unless you consider time literal, but that gets into some really heavy theoretical discussion which is so far from what we’re doing here… so I digress.).   That’s right, qualifying literally kicks off tomorrow (there will actually be a kick off, therefore… you get what i’m saying.), and we just figured why not get into the minds of one of those wonderful ladies and see what makes them tick off the field. It’s fantastic I tell ya!!

The Ladies are Comin’!!

Vancouver is welcoming some of the world’s best women to town as the 2012 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournament is set to kick off on the 19th.

With that in mind, we thought we’d remember some of the ladies that graced our cameras on the first season of WeLiveSoccer. Of course this is only a sampling!! We’ll be posting more profiles and of course, Soccer’s Hottest as we gear up for our 2nd great season.

In the spirit of the tournament, why not start things off with the one and only Hope Solo!

Other Stuff ::: The Himalayas

Written by A.J. on . Posted in Off The Field

We think we have a pretty cool team here at We Live Soccer, in our humble opinion of course.  It’s a small team, working our a$$’s off trying to grow and bring you the best coverage of the game here in North America.

That being said, our team likes to spread its wings and continue to get better at what they do, so that when doing what we do for WLS, it rocks!!  Did that make sense?  To put it another way… we do other stuff too.

Some “other stuff” Elia Saikaly, our Director of Photography , did recently was only spend a couple of months in the Himalayas, climbing to some insane height above sea level, braving substandard amounts of oxygen… all to get some pretty pictures.  And these “pretty picture” skills are what he brings to We Live Soccer.  I’m just sayin’… we’re all lucky to have these kind of skills on board!!

In reality, Elia was doing this in support of Finding Life and the great work they do.  You can read his account of the adventure on the Finding Life blog: bit.ly/prytXB  In the meantime, watch the video and jump over to his Vimeo page to read up on the tech side of the shoot if you be so inclined.

If you dig timelapse photography then you will love this.

…and if that’s weren’t enough, here’s our feature on Elia’s foundation Finding Life.

MLS 2012 Super Draft done and done!

Written by A.J. on . Posted in The Game, WLS Blog

So did it go the way you thought it would?  Did Montreal make the right choice?  Do you think Wenger is really stoked to start his career in the Great White North… on an expansion team?  Not to be biased, but we do think it’s pretty cool up here beyond the 49th parallel, but an expansion team… there could be a few lean years ahead.  Hopefully it all works out for ALL the boys in the draft.

Here’s a video from the boys over at MLS talking with the #1 overall pick Andrew Wenger

And for a complete rundown off all the picks, MLS has that for you too
